About project

The title of the European Capital of Culture for the year 2022 will be granted to one of the candidate cities of Lithuania. It is an oportunity to colour map of cultural identity, to evaluate importance of historical moments, to rediscover your city, its maturity and perspectives, a road to the country, Europe and the world. More information

The European Capital of Culture is one the reknown initiatives of the European Union, launched in 1985 by the Greek Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri. Today it marks the 30-year history. The program aims to promote the cultural contribution to the long-term city (regional) development, in coordination with the appropriate local strategies and priorities, to highlight the city (regional) identity, contribution to cultural diversity in Europe and belonging to a common European cultural space. The title of European Capital of Culture is awarded each year to a maximum of one city in each of the two Member States. For the year 2022, the two Members States entitled to host the European Capital of Culture action are Lithuania and Luxembourg. More information

Klaipeda – European Capital of Culture 2022

Klaipėda was, is, and shall be an ever changing city. A city, defiant to ordinary course of history, identity, geographical coordinates.

Through centuries Curonians, Germans, French, Swedish, British, Lithuanians created the city and region, whose viability is ensured by constant mobility, the renewal of human resources, meetings of innovative ideas, goods, and business, and cultural exchanges with other countries. The wish to get to know the unexperienced and to open up for those who do not know us is the nature and an exclusive characteristic of our port city.

Today the wind is most favourable to raise the sails, because that will mean keeping our young people, attracting the professionals of various fields, activating the community, and thus ensuring the desire of the city to move forward, as a journey is a goal in itself. Klaipėda 2022 is a journey to people… through culture, it is a meeting point where the cultural programme and strategy is a concrete promise to citizens and Europe.

We understand that European Capital of Culture is a long-term programme, to start in 2017 and to reach the peak in 2022. It is the best time for the breakthrough which can ensure the cultural, social, and economic viability of the future of the city. We have five years in order, together with our partners Neringa and Palanga, to change and strengthen the direction of the city development and to introduce an open to culture and people port city to Europe.
